I was completely calm, something very rare in our kind of life. It was raining harder than it had since we had been here in Brazil. I was sitting on my knees upon the muffled amazon earth.
My hands dug into the leafy damp dirt. The man kicked his heal into my back planting my face into the cool wet ground, smashing the sun glasses I wore into my cheeks; they broke. I was breathing heavily from the great distance I had previously ran. They were speaking a language I was beginning to understand; they were yelling about weather or not I should be kept alive or dead. Two men were making the point that if I was kept alive I would be worth a great sum to the Americans; the other man, the man with a pistol to my broken, bleeding head, he was all concerned that my body should fall here.
Half a week earlier he had stood on the opposite side of a steep cliff as I murdered his two companions after they had saved me from falling to a painful not so much death. This man was crushed that his companions had been ended so quickly with out excuse. laying there in the dirt listening to them discus the rest of my life I drifted back to the last day or so, remembering how it was exactly I had gotten her in the first place.
We traveled on the boat for at least three day, it had gotten tedious just traveling with nothing to do down a wide river filled with unknown animals and snakes. She was in a composed mood, not sure if she was happy or extremely mad at me. When we hit shore, there were three of our men waiting for us there, they had survived from the jungle incident; and taken a plane to our now destination. One of the men was extremely furious with my presence, possibly from the manor of which I had cut out the enemy. Even for myself it was pretty brutal. They didn't take any action to it so we all pressed on into the amazon, she was backed up to me as I walked; somewhat excited and scared at the same time. Her grabbing on to my arm I assumed she wanted me to know this, thus I gave her a quick nod. We had walked for almost an entire day without stopping. They spoke that just a mile down the road was the temple in which the door needed opening by her blood but it would be to hard to access it in the dark so we would make camp here. She hated camping just about as much as I had become to hate it. There was always noises that keep us awake and scared. Animals generally, sometimes people to. Eventually she fell asleep before they woke us up to continue are journey. When we had reached the temple I had no doubt that what ever it was they wanted in there was no small trinket. This temple was almost as giant as a tall apartment building in New York City. How on earth this could ever be hiding here for half of human life completely baffled me. The door, when we had reached it, was the size of a large moving truck with a humorously small key hole. They motioned for us to open it, handing me a knife as they stepped back. Our backs were to them, honest to say that if the man had not been so angry with me I would not have caught it. I was focusing carefully as I was about to prick her finer with the knife, I stopped instantly. Someone, a scared and loyal man, was feeling future guilt. They were not planning on taking us from the jungle. She looked up at my frozen face, worried. She must have seen it in my eyes as when I was turning to face them with my gun she had ducked down behind me to shield herself; a first in a very long time. I fired the first shot at the man leading the company. Two shots at the same time had flown by my face missing by inches. Again shots came from the amazon startling the Brazilians. Fire broke loose again, I grabbed her arm and we began to run down the steps from the door towards the jungle where the shots were coming from. The company followed, some if not many falling at this attempt. Three though, had broken through the line. I sent her off running in one direction, towards the boat. I ran in the other, taking the long way around. She was going to be fine for I was running towards are enemy and the Brazilians were following me for some reason.
I guessed that I had run for about two miles before the caught up with me and knocked me to my current place. I wasn't concerned that I might die, I was concerned that these men were going to die for the wrong reasons. The company of our enemies were circling around are little circle of debate. Yet the men debating had no idea. I laid in the dirt still as the shots were fired. Moments later he laid down on his back next to me. He was in an amused mood, almost cunning. "I guess you are feeling better enough to murder half of your company and almost fall off a cliff." I nodded with a small smile. I was trying to see if he wanted to kill me or just annoy me. He smiled, lifted his body up and with one arm pulled mine to my feet. I was staring him dead in the eyes, something had changed in him. He did not look as if he was in the mood to be fighting. "Well lets go get her before a giant snake does." If it could happen I swear to god my hair stood up straight on my head, I got the deer in the head lights look and he laughed so loud the entire jungle could hear him. I composed my face no amused and we walked off towards the boat. We were a few feet away when we stopped dead in our tracks, half of his company lay dead the other half planet still against trees, they were tied up. She laid on the ground in a puddle of blood, crying. She stood over her with a sad look on her face, as if she just realized he did something horrible. I ran over and grabbed her arms as she struggled to get free, he untied his men. My sister lay in the puddle, blood seeping out through her hand and right shoulder where she had been shot. The young girl gave up in my arms instantly depressed from the events that she had just out together from over the years. We fell to the ground, her still in my arms. Someone came and tended to my sister as I sat there stunned at what just happened, completely frozen in time. It was still raining, the water was trickling down my face, someone had taken them both to the boat and began preparing it to be taken back to Rio. He came and stood in front of me, I looked up, his eyes told me that everything would be okay. I spoke,"All this time, we have been running, I have been protecting her. I have died for her, but simply she could have just died from something so over looked, something so simple as someone she knew along time ago looking for vengeance." He stood there for a moment and pondered what I had just said. He held out his arm, I took it and he pulled me to my feet once again. We walked back to the boat as I composed myself. He was reluctant in what he was doing, I could feel it coming but I did not care, I even stopped walking to let it happen, I wanted to sleep; I wanted to rest. The needle pierced the skin on my neck so gracefully; his arms held me as I stumbled from the substance that was putting me to sleep.
He wouldn't kill me, and I doubt that he will kill her. He had another plan of his own he was carrying out, something not in our favor but not filled with death, something I could handle when the time came.
He carried her body from the jungle onto the boat, placing her next to the other two girls. The company stated the boat and they headed back to Rio. He felt somewhat relieved and accomplished. Content.
