My hand was above my eyes shielding them from the sun as I looked up at the almost empty sky. There was a plane flying over head, it had already seen me walking alone for miles in the extremely humid desert, it was soon to land.
If this had been anyone but myself I would find this very humorous; but it was me stranded out here in the desert of god knows where. The plane had finally landed and I began to walk toward it. It was a women pilot, she was about my age I guessed. It surprised me that she could fly alone so young; I must have been dropped in a country other than America. She walked towards me, water in had. She was quite pretty, could have been the extreme heat though. He skin was tan and scruffy, someone of a low class in society; but with access to aircraft. I began to speak, my voice was horse from me yelling days before; "Do you speak english?" She nodded, I asked the bluntest question I could think of to help her understand for she did not know that much english by the way she looked. "Where am I?" I smiled half a bit as I said this. "Mexico", she replied in a mexican accent, but yet it sounded like she had been raised American. "You are about six miles from the border of America." I nodded. "Have you been walking for much long?" "Yes, for days, I think I was quite lost". She motioned for me to go with her to the plane. It was a two seater, very old, I had my doubts about its reliability but it was better than walking. The plane rolled for a few feet before it took to the air, it was loud and rough. She felt enjoyment for it, her feelings were warm and caring, something I had almost forgotten in people. We landed on a small strip next to a large warehouse. She took me into the giant building, there were few men in there working with large crates, I assumed drugs; no of my concern though. I was taken into an office where a scruffy man sat at an old rusted desk. The man was old and looked as if he had seen much in his time. The girl walked to him and whispered in his ear, I assumed a farther figure to her. He nodded, smiled lightly towards me and she took me into a room behind his desk. It was a wash room, I cleaned myself up. "My farther tells me that you may gain passage to the Americas with his next truck load if you wish or you may stay here for work if that is what you require." This statement took me sum off guard, I was not expecting a choice or an ultimatum. He feelings matched her eyes as she would rather me stay, she felt trapped and alone, egger for friendship. I looked to she sympathetically, she felt that I was to take her first offer, she was not surprised. "I have something out of my control I am bound to, please understand. If though, a way out you seek I might be able to help you." She was taken off guard as I was, she pondered this for a moment. "You will take me with you?" "To the Americas, but not any further, you will have to find your way from there." She nodded, I though to myself to why I was doing this for a complete stranger, it seemed to be my weak spot. We took a wagon to the nearest town, where I purchased two spots on the next bus for America. She looked to me worried, she did not have a visa, I spoke; "I have lots of experience getting people places unnoticed don't worry." She nodded, but still unsure and frightened. I went to the nearest bank, they would not have dropped me in Mexico alone, he cared to much for that, and I'm sure he would rather me follow; always in for a good fight. The bus was about to leave as we were walking from the bank, we caught it by a fly. It rode for hours, the closer we got the more frightened she became. I touched her arm lightly, startling her: "You cannot feel so worried around me understand, it is bad." She looked as if she somewhat understood, she calmed herself down as best she could. The bus was all silent as It crossed the border to America pulling over to be checked for visa's. She stayed calm, two men, border patrol boarded the bus. I was correct in my assumption that a former friend was still working this job, he laid he eyes on me, walking by are seats altogether. Four Mexicans were escorted off the bus, none being us. The bus road on to the nearest city in Texas. We entered the nearest connivence store, where I located a pay phone to make a call, she made her way to an American bathroom; excited. I smiled as I dialed the number, after two ring his voice answered, "Hello". It was drudgey and sleepy, "Where are you?" He became more awake, "I can't tell you that and you know it, where are you?" "Not in Mexico, is she with you?", "They both are, in separate rooms of corse, no need in the black haired one shooting the place up." "You took her from Brazil!" I had to insert more coins, he paused and waited. "What else was I to do with her? I could not leave her in Rio drugged and knocked out." "You left me in the desert of Mexico", my voice was noting but sarcastic, she came from the bathroom to stand near me. "Okay, look, it was a precaution of you waking up mad.." "What are you going to do with her?" He sighed, "Not kill her if thats what you mean, I have an idea." "Fantastic!" I hung up the phone in a slam. He was impossible, I assumed he was back in Virginia, I hated Virginia and he knew it. The mexican girl who had traveled with me spoke, "Can I help, please, I want to." I sighed, "I have no one here in America, please" She was pleading. "I live a dangerous life, you cannot survive with me.." She looked at me with big brown eyes, I could tell she did not care, she was afraid of being alone. I sighed one more time and walked from the connivence store, she followed.
